This pattern is a semicircular pi-inspired shawl that incorporates lace patterns designed by Naomi Parkhurst of Gannet Designs. These lace patterns encode specific words: in this case, “Swags,” “Semiramis,” and “Rest.” Naomi describes her process as follows:

I turn the letters into numbers, then chart the numbers onto grids in various ways. Finally, when I make the chart into lace, I turn the marked squares into yarnovers and work out where to place the corresponding decreases.”

Her process is fascinating: read more at her blog, Gannet Designs

This shawl is knitted from the center out, and could be adapted to an even larger shawl, if you have more yarn, by knitting a full repeat of the third lace pattern, “Rest,” up to six times.

Yarn Choice and Needles:
This pattern was written and designed as part of a collaborative kit between Yarn Over New York and KnitSpinQuilt.

You can buy the kit, which includes yarn, a project bag, a stitch marker, and a download code for the pattern through Yarn Over New York’s website.

If you want to work from stash, this pattern will work with any fingering-weight yarn you have in stash -- just check yardage before you get started -- a 400 yard skein will likely fall short of the small size.

Samples Used:
Samples used one skein of Yarn Over New York Astoria (blue) or two skeins of Yarn Over New York Times Square Sock (green). Test knitters used a variety of fingering weight yarns (see projects for details).

Gauge Notes:
Because this is a shawl, and a lace shawl at that, gauge is not critical. Know that if you get much looser gauge, you’ll use more yarn, though, and keep an eye on your yardage!

Yardage Requirements:
Small: 435 yards
Large: 800 yards

Final Sizes:
Small: 22” x 44”
Large: 32” x 64”

Lace Notes:
This pattern includes full written instructions and also includes charts for all the lace. It’s laid out so you can print selectively, and save paper.
