If you’re a dog musher, you might have heard of Leonhard Seppala from Skibotn. But did you know that he was of Kven (Finnish) descent? He was a gold miner and dog musher in Alaska. It is said that he was one of the most skilled dog mushers of his time.

Leonhard traveled to Finnmark to fish every winter, and he participated in the Winter Olympics in 1932. He also contributed to combating a diphtheria epidemic.

Today, Seppala has his own monument in Skibotn. The sweater is in honor of Seppala, his contributions to dog mushing, and his efforts during the epidemic back in 1925.
