I have written a tutorial on how to make simple illusions. Included are several examples, explanations of how they work and suggestions on how to use them in your own projects.

You can use any smooth yarn, so long as the contrast between the two colours is reasonable. You should use the needles suggested for the yarn or slightly smaller in order to help define the illusion.
