A generous cabled shawl to keep winter at bay.

Deep cables wrap luxuriously around your neck, decreasing in depth until the shawl smoothes out around your shoulders. This way, there is maximum warmth where you need it, without the bulk under your coat.

Keep the emphasis on texture by choosing a neutral shade – then you can just throw it on over anything. Or choose a bold colour to defeat the winter blues in dramatic style.

The shawl is worked lengthwise all in one piece; you can make it as long as you want. The cabled edge along the neck gives the shawl a slight curve, helping it sit nicely. The lower edge is stabilised with a mock i-cord (easier than the real thing), made as you work. This is an intermediate project.

BOTH written instructions AND a chart are included.

At the end of every pattern in Knit Play Colour, you will find ideas on how to “play” with the design - project details here.

Shown in an aran yarn, you can play with the yarn weight, from DK or worsted through to bulky. Instructions are given on adjusting the pattern to a different width or gauge, to suit the yarn you want to use.

PLAY IDEAS

UPDATE: New sample images in Eden Cottage Whitfell Chunky in Natural. This is how amazing it can look when you “play” with the patterns in the book.

Some of the ideas on how to “Play” with the pattern are shown at the swatch at left. You can allow more or less yarn depending on how big you want the shawl to be:

  • Go super-snuggly in alpaca Eden Cottage Yarns Whitfell Chunky (this swatch is reduced stitches compared to original version, to keep to narrower width). Allow 7-8 x Natural.
  • For a rural feel, try Yorkshire Spinners Bluefaced Leicester Aran. Allow 6-7 x undyed Natural Lt Brown.
  • For an urban look, try Blue Sky Alpacas Suri Merino. Allow 6-7 x Fog.

For more about playing with this pattern, including these ideas, visit the Shadowlines blog post.

All details needed to make these options are included in the book - including sizes and gauges. All patterns are tech edited and tested in a range of yarns.
