Spending a lot of time outdoors lends itself to an appreciation of the Seasons and I’m always using wool and handmade items to stay warm while I’m outside.

I decided to create some patterns as a Celebration of Seasons where I share some of the items I like to use while I’m hiking/outdoors - all are inspired by the area around me.

The Shagbark Socks were inspired by one of my favorite trees - the Shagbark Hickory. It’s an easy tree to identify by the shaggy bark that is also useful for bats when they are looking for places to cozy up and rest!

Hiking in the Winter is one of the best things there is - it’s cool, quiet, and you can feel like you’re in another world. Plus, the tree trunks (and their different types of bark) are showcased and you can appreciate their subtle differences. Winter hiking warrants thick comfy socks though, and I like a tight gauge for durability. These socks are sturdy enough to use on the trails but comfy and cozy enough to wear while enjoying a fire.

Cables are present on both sides of the leg and continue down into the heel flap. Shown in the pattern was an experiment of mine - I really enjoy this sock pattern but I wanted to see what would happen if I used a larger needle and a slightly lighter-weight yarn. The result is a fantastic pair of lounge/bed socks so keep that in mind if you’re not all that into hiking but still like thick cozy socks!

This pattern features multiple CO’s and you can always modify yarn weight/needle size to suit your needs/desired size.
