This bag is knitted loosely in the round, then felted in the washing machine. During the felting process the bag will shrink and become much sturdier, though it does still remain a decent size. The exact size of the finished bag will depend on the wool and felting temperatures used.

The bag has a large gusseted pocket at the front, underneath the flap which closes with a large decorative button. A contrast yarn for the base and pocket gusset adds additional interesting detail.

It is ESSENTIAL that you use a yarn that is not a machine-washable or superwash variety. Ideally the yarn should be 100% pure wool. Called Shepherdess’s Satchel, we think that using wool from specific sheep breeds is perfect. Typically you will require 350g of the main shade and 150g of the contrast. It is important that the felting characteristics of the two yarns are the same - eg two shades of the same breed, or two dyed versions of the same wool.

5.5 mm circular or double ended needles are needed for the main part of the bag, 5.5 mm straight needles for the pocket and 4.5 mm double ended needles for the I-cord handles.

It is possible to use a light aran weight yarn for this bag, though the end result will be smaller.
