This shrug is part of a collection called Shieldmaiden Knits, featuring designs in Malabrigo Yarn, inspired by the epic Viking style.

Vikings were poets and artists. Their woodwork, carvings, bracelets and intricate needle cases and combs all suggest a great passion for design. Their words and sagas suggest a love of dramatic gestures.

The pieces in this collection take the gorgeous colors and textures of Malabrigo yarns, and use simple shapes and easy lace to bring about dramatic results. These are not historically accurate designs, but instead are modern pieces inspired by my research into Viking Age life.

Sizes Included

Measure across back, from center of one underam to the other; separately, measure around upper arm. Sizes are approximate, since very large stitches can’t always be measured exactly. Err on the large size. The garment fits closely.

XS = 17.5”/44.5 cm across as above; 12”/30.5 cm upper arm circumference
S = 19”/44.5 cm across back; 14”/35.5 cm upper arm circumference
M = 20”/46 cm across back; 16”/41 cm upper arm circumference
L = 22”/48 cm across back; 18”/46 cm upper arm circumference

Yardage & Construction

The large size uses all of 3 skeins of Gruesa. If you are concerned, purchase 4 skeins. You’ll have enough leftover for other projects.

This shrug is worked as a flat rectangle, folded and sewn to form very short sleeve caps.
