As I was making a blanket that incorporated granny squares, I wondered what it might be like if I put the first and last stitch of the granny cluster into the stitch below rather than making all three stitches of the cluster into the chain space.

I tried it out and thus, Shift+Granny was born, and I liked it! So I kept it and decided to share it!

It’s still recognizable as a granny square, but this small change offers sleeker crisper lines for those seeking a sharper alternative to the softness of the classic granny square.

The sample uses Lion Brand Jiffy with a 6.5mm hook, but any yarn and hook can be used to create a fabric you like. You may need to add or subtract rows to get the desired size.

The pattern includes written instructions on one page and a full chart on another page so you can use either or both. There is also a photo gallery to help illustrate the way the corners are made, so if you are conserving paper and ink but you’d like to print the document, I suggest you print only pages 3 and 4 (the written instructions and chart, respectively).

The chart was made using Chet (as in crochet), freely available here: chetapp.weebly.com

A small note about the yardage: It is a rough estimate, let me know if you get an accurate measurement so I can change the information accordingly, good luck!
