Wrapped in color…
We love painted and space-dyed yarns—the kind that pool and flash and stripe. They are lovely in the skein but can be unpredictable in the knitting. What to do? Work short rows!

Construction
Two mirrored socks are worked from the toe up. The spiraling chevron band is worked sideways with short rows. The short-row heel extends almost completely around the foot, to expand the instep. The cuff can be worked with one color (the variegated yarn), or two colors using a lazy semi-intarsia technique.

Sizes
Circumferences for sock foot and ankle are given below for 2.5 mm needles and average to heavy fingering yarn.

  • Small: 7 inches/18 cm - 7.5 inches/19 cm
  • Medium: 7.75 inches/20 cm - 8.5”/21.5 cm
  • Large: 8.5 inches/21.5 cm - 9.25”/23.5 cm

For 2.25 mm needles and light to average fingering yarn, subtract .5 inches/1.5 cm from the above measurements.

Notions
Stitch markers (2-3), optional removable markers for shadow wraps(4), yarn needle for weaving in ends.

Techniques
Working in the round on small needles, increases and decreases, short rows, and slipping stitches. It’s helpful to have worked sock toes, heels and cuffs, but normal sock construction is out the window here. Learning to knit backward will speed up the short rows (see link below). There are no charts; written instructions only.
