Description
The Simmer hat and headband pattern are designed to keep your head extra cozy in winter. Both designs are geared to maximize your use of a skein of Aran or Chunky weight yarn, while keeping control over the size. The headband is worked flat and seamed or grafted at the end, while the hat is worked from the top down. Optionally, you can attach a pom pom to the hat after finishing.

Size and finished measurements
HAT
Sizes: 1 (2), for 5 (6) repeats of the chart. The chart indicates a choice of two fits for the brim per size, which will fit between head circumferences 43 – 68 cm / 17 – 26.75” at the brim.

A- Height of cable pattern: 19 cm / 7.5”.
B - Circumference of cap: 47.5 (57) cm / 18.75 (22.5)” in a relaxed state.
C - Circumference of brim: 44 (53) cm / 17.25 (20.75)” or 33 (40) cm / 13 (15.75)”.

I calculate approximately 15 cm / 6” negative ease for the brim circumference, but I like my brims to be quite tight (I have a 56 cm / 22” head). 10 cm / 4” is the standard negative ease. See chart for adjustments.

D - Height of brim when using full skein:
approximately 10 cm / 4” when flat, 5 cm / 2” when folded in size 2.

HEADBAND
E - Height/width: 13 cm / 5.25”.
F - Circumference: minimum circumference of 46 cm / 18” when working full charts (see chart for adjustments). Calculate approximately 10 cm / 4” of lengthwise negative ease.

Yarn
HAT
One full skein of Aran weight yarn (166 m per 100 gr). Sample uses Fruitful Fusion Superwash Merino Aran in the color Tropical Heatwave.

HEADBAND
One full skein of Chunky weight yarn (100 m per 100 gr). Sample uses Yipee Yarn Chunky Baby Alpaca in color Dad’s Cowl.

Gauge
Over 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” in cable pattern after gently blocking:
Hat: 28 sts x 24 rows using Aran weight yarn on the larger needle.
Headband: 21 sts x 16 rows using Chunky weight yarn.

Needles
Hat: US 7 / 4.5 mm and US 6 / 4 mm 40.5 cm / 16” circular needles and DPNs for working small circumferences in the round. You can also opt to use a 80 cm / 31” minimum circular needle for working the entire hat using the magic loop method.
Headband: US 10 / 6 mm needles. No specific length of cable or needle is necessary as the headband is worked flat.

For both versions, adjust needle sizes as necessary to match gauge.

Notions
Tapestry needle, 1 fixed/ring stitch marker, 1 locking ring marker, cable needle, second cable needle for hat pattern. If you want to work a 3-needle bind off for the headband, make sure you have a third needle of appropriate size ready.
Optional: pompom for the hat. Sample uses a Toft Interchangeable Alpaca fur pompom in color pink.

Techniques
Basic knitting stitches, cable knitting, seaming or grafting, magic circle cast on for knitting.
