Simple Basic Cap from Scraps
A simple knitted cap worked in the round on 16” circulars and deceases worked with the magic loop method or on dpn’s.
Two colors are used to work alternating stripes in the top part of the cap while carrying the unused yarns up the inside edge.
May be worked with one or more colors. The choice is yours.
Less than half a skein was used of each two colors to make the cap to fit a 23” head.
I was asked about how to make this cap fit a smaller head. My answer is below.
Fitting Info:
Measure the part of your head where you expect to wear the band of the cap and subtract one inch. Select the yarn you wish to use and swatch with an appropriate needle size for that yarn. Measure and find the amount of stitches per inch and multiply that number by the head measurement. That is the number of stitches to cast on. (I think my yarn was getting 5 sts to the inch). You may have to go up or down a few sts to get a number that is divisible by eight (the number of decease sections in the top). Sometimes it is better to use a needle one size smaller than the one used for the swatch to work the ribbing with. Then move up to the needle size used for the swatch to work the cap with.
I have noticed that I get better results when using wool or a good wool blend than when using 100% acrylic.
~ Please, post a picture of your cap. I would love to see it. Thank you for downloading my pattern.~
