Simple Chunky Cowl
MY DESIGN IDEAS AND ADVICE
I first designed this pattern in 2019 for a Learn to Knit course. The sessions ran over a few Sundays, so I wanted to create something super easy and fun that could be made with just two hanks of the beautiful Studio Donegal Soft Chunky yarn.
All you need to know for this cowl is how to cast on, knit, and cast off (I’ve created videos to help with this if you’re just starting out).
I chose two shades for the sample to make it a bit more fun and to show how easy it is to introduce a new colour. Experienced knitters will probably find this obvious, but for beginners it’s reassuring to see just how simple it is in a project like this. The pattern uses two hanks, which is enough to make two cowls. If you’d prefer to knit yours in a single colour, one hank is enough for one cowl.
And speaking of experienced knitters – this little cowl is also a fab quick project. I’d say you can knit it in an evening or two, perfect for an instant dose of warmth or a last-minute present.
CONSTRUCTION
Knitted in rows from the bottom up in one piece.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, cast off. Optional to join the cast on and cast off edge to create a cowl. To create the feeling of joy I recommended the mattress stitch when joining your edges together.
YARN
One 100g hank each of Studio Donegal Soft Chunky in shade A & shade B.
125m/136yds per 100g
SUGGESTED KNITTING NEEDLES
6mm.
GAUGE (tension)
14 stitches and 26 rows to 10cm square over garter stitch. I obtained this gauge with 6mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Approx. 22cm x 56cm.
