Simple Garter Stitch Square
The Simple Garter Stitch Blanket is perfect for new and returning knitters, as well as experienced knitters looking for a soothing, stash-busting project. Designed with simple garter stitch squares, this pattern is easy to pick up and put down – ideal for those quiet moments that sometimes turn into just 10 minutes!
It is a great blanket for baby. I recommend merino cotton dk. You’ll need 2 balls of 3 shades to make the blanket size in the pattern.
For beginners, it’s a gentle introduction to knitting, and for more experienced knitters, it’s a satisfying way to see a little pile of squares grow, one film night at a time. This pattern is also great for those on night shifts, whether caring for a baby or working, as well as for knit-and-natter gatherings when you want to knit without too much concentration.
The pattern is written to make one square, so you can adjust the size of the blanket however you like. For a pram or cot-sized blanket (approx. 62cm x 62cm), I used one 100g hank each in three different shades – light brown (the undyed version of WYS Bluefaced Leicester DK find it here), with teal and lime green (in the dyed version of the Bluefaced Leicester DK find the shades here) but you can personalise it with your own colour choices.
Knitting this blanket is also a great way to understand gauge (tension). Every knitter’s gauge is unique and can change over time, much like how our preferences for chocolate or coffee might evolve! When I first started knitting, my gauge was much tighter than it is now, and I adjusted my needle sizes accordingly. The beauty of this project is that it allows you to knit at your own pace while becoming more familiar with your knitting style.
CONSTRUCTION
Each square is knitted flat from the bottom up in one piece then joined together.
TECHNIQUES USED
Cast on, knit, cast off. Optional but recommended to create the feeling of joy when joining your pieces: mattress stitch.
YARN

& One 100g hank each of WYS Bluefaced Leicester DK – Dyed, in shade B and shade C
SUGGESTED NEEDLES
4mm.
GAUGE (tension)
22 stitches and 44 rows to 10cm square over garter stitch. I obtained this gauge with 4mm needles.
It is important to obtain gauge so do swatch and change your needle size to achieve the correct gauge if you need to.
