This Simple Vertical Stripe Placemat crochet pattern makes a rectangular placemat approximately 10 inches tall by 14 inches wide.

I used Lily Sugar ‘n Cream in Country Side Ombre, which randomly gives the fabric almost an argyle plaid effect that I like, depending on where the colors fall in relation to your stitch work. (See my third photo for two examples.) Feel free to experiment with other 100% cotton or wool yarns to achieve a color scheme that suits your home’s decor.

Placemat is worked flat in rows with a single round of either sc or crab stitch edging, using very basic crochet stitches: ch (chain), sc (single crochet), sl (slip stitch), and optional: crab stitch edging (rev sc).

Gauge on this project is only important if you want to achieve the same size finished placemat as I have made. If you work a sample swatch and find that your tension is significantly looser or tighter than mine, you can adjust your hook size and/or the stitch count to achieve your desired finished placemat size.
