  • Fingerless Mitts are sized to fit an ‘average’ woman’s hand with a palm just under 3 inches across.
  • Hat is sized to fit an ‘average’ woman’s head about 21 inches around.
  • Poncho is one size fits most adult women, and measures about 25 inches long, excluding fringe.

The pictured set used 4 full skeins of Hobby Lobby’s ‘I Love This Yarn’, which is packaged in 5 oz, 252 yard skeins, part of 1 skein for the hat and fingerless mitts, 3 skeins for the poncho without fringe, and the rest of the 1st skein for the fringe.

  • Hat- approximately 2 ounces, 102 yards
  • Fingerless Mitts- approximately 1.5 ounces, 75 yards
  • Poncho, excluding fringe- approximately 15 ounces, 756 yards
  • Fringe- approximately 1.5 ounce, 75 yards

It is recommended to make the hat and fingerless mitts first, and then make the poncho. This will ensure you have enough yarn, as the poncho design is a simple repetition and may be fastened off at the end of any rnd for desired length or according to the amount of yarn you have!

The story of how this set came to be…
About 20 years ago I wanted to make a poncho.
My mother had made me and my sisters ponchos when we were little kids and I loved mine and wore them until they were thread bare, and then wore the ones that had been my sisters’ when they got tired of them.
I knew I wanted a lacy open design, and I could NOT find a pattern like that. Oh there were plenty of patterns, but they were all for ‘warm’, close fabric ponchos- and I wanted one which would be light and airy…
so I made up the design myself.
I still have that poncho, still wear it, and yes, it is starting to look 20 years old now!
SO- I decided to work up another one for myself, and this time add a matching hat and matching mitts because I like matching stuff- it’s a girl thing, right? The husband doesn’t quite get that thinking!
I thought for sure somebody would have designed such a set in all these intervening years, but I looked and looked and did not find anything again!
That astounded me, so I looked some more… but if there is such a set anywhere it sure is a well kept secret!
Enter- the Simply Spring V-Stitch Poncho, with matching hat and fingerless mitts, designed by Heritage Heartcraft!

And while the name says ‘spring’ it is certainly also very appropriate for Autumn, too!
