Almost any flat bed knitting machine may be used. These begin as a simple rectangle. One end of the rectangle is sewn to one side and voila! A poncho. The fancy lacy piece that seems like an addition is really just one end of the strip. Lots of variations are possible. All pieces are knitted using worsted weight #4 yarn on the bulky or mid-gauge machine or fingering weight #1 yarn on the standard gauge or Passap machine. Adjust stitch dial for this poncho pattern only to get 3.5 stitches/4.5 rows per inch in worsted weight yarn or 6.6 stitches/9 rows per inch on the standard gauge. Stitch dial will be set a bit larger than usual to get these gauges. We are knit- ting a little bit loosely because want softly draping fabric for this poncho. The design is nicest in very soft yarn, especially on the bulky. I favor Deborah Norville Everyday Worsted. Passaps use use black strippers and standard gauge pattern.
