Skóleistar are soft shoe liners that double as slippers, knitted here in a blend of wool and silk-mohair. The four pattern variations are composed of different motifs from Tailor Debes’s book. There is a long-standing tradition of knitted skóleistar in the Faroes, made from Faroese wool and worn inside wooden clogs or rubber shoes. Nowadays they’re used as house slippers. When you’re visiting older Faroese people, you’ll often be asked if you’d like to borrow a pair of skóleistar to keep your feet warm - a lovely display of hospitality tha has survived into this millenium.
