This is a really basic hat pattern with some fun embellishment ideas. The yarn really makes the hat but the Sensations Licorice that I used is no longer available at JoAnn Fabrics. Any bulky yarn that obtains the gauge will look great, especially one that is a thick and thin-type yarn.
