This free pattern is adapted from a pattern written and published by Maud Churchill Nicoll in Knitting and Sewing: How to Make Seventy Useful Articles for Men in the Army and Navy, 1918. While the original pattern is long out of print, as a historical artifact, several PDF versions of the book are available for copy and distribution.
