FINISHED SIZE:

Finished Blocked Measurements without Tassels: 56” x 56” x 86” and 26” deep at center.

MATERIALS:

Expression Fiber Arts Amal Fingering Yarn

Shown in colors: Abundance (C1), Enlighten (C2), Zenith (C3)

If these colors aren’t available, any from this category will work.

300 to 390 yds of each color was used in the sample, approx. total 1,052 yds.

These estimates include the yardage required to make the shawl with the optional tassels. If you choose to make the tassels, you’ll need almost the entire skein of C3, so gauge is very important in this pattern.

NEEDLES:

US size 6 (4 mm) 16”-60” circular knitting needle.

As the shawl grows in size, you’ll find it easier to knit if you increase the length of your needle’s cable.

SKILL LEVEL:

Intermediate: This pattern is for those who feel comfortable with knitting and have made a variety of projects, using various skills and techniques. Skills/concepts include: working with more than one yarn at a time, slipping stitches, repositioning the yarn between the front and the back, carrying nonworking yarn up the side or back, and completing a garter tab cast on.

Notes From the Designer:

Slip into the rhythmic fluidity of Slipdream — a symmetrical, triangular, multicolored shawl that includes three repeating stitch patterns and uses Expression Fiber Arts’ Amal Fingering yarn. Slipdream is knitted flat in one piece and is composed of alternating sections of slipped garter stitch, slipped honeycomb stripes, and a two-color mosaic design. While the shawl design might look complicated, all of its sections are made using basic knit and purl stitches that are combined with slipped stitches, which makes knitting the Slipdream a veritable breeze.

You will need three different colors of yarn for this pattern. The slipped garter stitch will always be knitted with a single color, while the slipped honeycomb stripes will always use all three colors. The mosaic design uses two colors. To knit Slipdream, you’ll begin with a garter tab cast on, and you’ll increase the shawl’s size by adding two stitches at both the beginning and end of each right-side row, as well as one stitch on each side of the triangle’s central axis. Therefore, every right-side row adds six stitches to your overall stitch count. This creates a longer, thinner triangle shawl. The pattern also includes directions for making tassels, which are optional, as well as both written and charted instructions.

  • Slipdream begins with a garter tab cast on. After you’ve completed the cast-on rows, each RS row begins with a (kfb, yo) and ends with a (yo, kfb), which increases your stitch count by four stitches. Additionally, you’ll also use yarn overs to add one stitch on each side of the triangle’s central axis. At the completion of every RS row, you’ll have increased your stitch count by six stitches. Stitch counts are included at the end of RS rows to help you check your progress.
  • Throughout the shawl, you’ll work with two to three colors of yarn at the same time. You can carry your nonworking yarn up the side or back until you’re instructed to break the yarn.
  • In all sections, you’ll be instructed to slip stitches. All stitches are slipped purlwise. Be sure to note whether the yarn needs to be held to the back or the front when you’re slipping these stitches. At the end of the pattern, you’ll find instructions for making tassels, which you’ll attach to the three points of the shawl if you choose to do so.
