A relaxed slouchy hat with soft purl ridges running up the body, worked in the round from a snug ribbed brim.

About the pattern
Worked in the round from the brim up, so every row is a round and there is no wrong side to keep track of. A 2x2 rib brim, then bands of knit rounds that sit flat and bands of purl rounds that raise a ridge across the fabric. The ridges carry on up through the crown, so the texture goes right over the top. It is fully written, round by round, with a stitch count at every stage, so there is no chart to follow. Includes the full written pattern, abbreviations and construction notes.

Skill level: Beginner. Comfortable knitting and purling in the round, working 2x2 rib, a simple increase and a simple decrease. The only fiddly moment is swapping needles as the crown closes.

Yarn: DK weight, approx 179 m / 195 yds (80 g). That is 2 x 50 g balls. The sample is West Yorkshire Spinners Bo Peep DK, shade Sailboat (52% Falkland wool, 48% nylon). Any DK works. A lightweight aran also works and gives a firmer fabric with a little less slouch. The hats in the photographs are earlier samples.

Needles: 3.25 mm (US 3) circular, 80 cm / 31.50 in long, for the brim. 4 mm (US 6) circular, 100 cm / 39.37 in long, for the body. A set of 4 mm (US 6) double-pointed needles, or a second short circular, for the crown. You can also use magic loop.

Gauge: 22 sts to 10 cm / 4 in over stocking stitch on the 4 mm needle, worked in the round. 22 rounds to 10 cm / 4 in over the body as worked, knit and purl bands together. Gauge is not critical for a hat, but it sets the finished size and how much slouch you get.

Notions: 1 stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors.

Finished measurements: Brim circumference 30 cm / 11.81 in unstretched, the rib stretches to fit. Circumference at the widest point 54 cm / 21.26 in unstretched; the purl ridges draw the fabric in and it opens out when worn. Length 18 cm / 7.09 in laid flat, from the cast-on edge to the top. Fits an adult head of 58 cm / 22.83 in.
