Yarn: A; 2 oz. fine weaving, 2-ply; as photographed, 1 oz. each of two blues. Needles: number 12

Gauge: 3 stitches to one inch

Chart: one box = 6 stitches and 6 ridges. Count boxes wide and boxes high to figure out for the various units how many stitches to cast on and how many ridges high to knit.

To knit: From the three designs on the chart it is evident that the outline drawing may be drawn a dozen times and each drawing will suggest a dozen in­terior designs. It may be knitted, for instance, as a single unit: start as a double wing and after 36 ridges change to a divided square; after 6 ridges of a divided square, change to a divided triangle which is knit for 12 ridges and cast off. This is the first example of an adapted unit, or a single unit which changes from one kind of unit to another as it is knitted.
