Small Ghosts for Halloween Overlay Mosaic Hat
SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate or Confident Beginner
Crochet Terminology: US crochet terminology
This pattern is for a crocheted hat and an optional ear/neck warmer with ghost motifs, using overlay mosaic crochet techniques. The hat is made in the round, from the brim up, in one piece, requiring no seaming.
The Small Ghosts overlay mosaic crochet hat is offered in four sizes (XS, S, M, L), that fit a head circumference of (17–18”, 19–20”, 21–22”, 23–24”) or (43–46 cm, 48–51 cm, 53–56 cm, 58.5–61 cm), typical of a (Child 3–10 years old, Teen/Small Adult, Medium Adult, Large Adult).
The hat is worked in the round, from the bottom up, starting with the ribbing. This way, if you are unsure about which size to make, you can try it on early, see how it fits and change sizes, if needed. The pattern was developed for DK weight yarn, with a gauge of 18 dc stitches in 9 rows in a 4”x4’ (10 cm x 10 cm) square.
The crown’s dome shape is completed with decreases, so the top is smooth and round, not gathered/cinched. The shape is more of a beanie, not of a slouchy type hat.
This pattern is not complicated, but if you are completely new to crochet as a craft, this will be too challenging as a first project. If you are confident in your basic crochet skills, but new to mosaic crochet, this may be a good introductory project. The stitches you need to know are ch, slst, sc, hdc, dc, fpdc, bpdc. You need to know which is the front loop, and which is the back loop.
If you are experienced with mosaic crochet, you may find this project easy – some instructional details may be unnecessary to you, in that case, please feel free to skip the tutorial sections.
The pattern includes written instructions and mosaic charts, provided separately for right-handed and left-handed crocheters, and round-by-round progress pictures. Please utilize any of these, as necessary. This pattern includes 26 pages. If you decide to print it, you can print only the pages necessary for you – the Table of Contents will help you find the right page numbers.
