This pattern works well with any yarn weight and the recommended hook size. I have used-
Aran cotton with 4.5mm hook
Chunky chenille with 6.5mm hook
Super chunky with 10mm hook

Although the skill level is easy/beginner you will need a basic knowledge of crochet stitches.
