It snowed and there was an unexpected shortage of gloves in the house. Added to that (and quite bizarrely), there were only right handed gloves in the basket!

This prompted me to reach into stash and make some super quick mittens.

Prototype complete and put into action, I realised that it’s really difficult to get the correct mitten on the correct hand when out the cold and in a hurry to beat Jack Frost.

And that is how this pattern came about.

Each mitten takes around three hours to make, the pattern is suitable for both hands (although I have written the instructions for mirror image fingertip shaping for those who prefer), and it’s a perfect stash busting project, as each mitten uses around 30g of Aran weight yarn and it really doesn’t matter if both hands are different colours.

Beginning with the cuff, the mitten is worked up to the fingertips. The thumb is worked first for two reasons a) to make a neater join with the hand and b) because it is the fiddliest part of the project - once the thumb is complete, you just let your needle points whizz away up to the top!

And, by the way, did you notice the super pretty textured cuffs?
