Snow Day is an elegant and simple sweater full of thoughtful details. Aimed both at beginners and experienced knitters, the pattern is written out twice. Seasoned knitters can read the standard pattern code whereas newer knitters will appreciate the clear instructions in plain, detailed English. There is also a comprehensive series of tutorials with photographs available at At Home in the Thirties.

Snow Day was designed as a knitting primer. While the construction is deliberately streamlined, the pattern is a fun and educational knit. It incorporates ribbing, garter stitch edging, bobble stitch and flattering notches at the lower side seams. The pattern and tutorial take the knitter through each technique in turn.

The pattern calls for Drops Alaska, which is a 3-ply woollen Aran yarn. Available in a range of beautiful colours, it knits up into a thick, soft sweater just popping with texture.

Snow Day is intended to be worn with 1-2” positive ease. The smallest size fits girls of 11-12, while the largest size available is a finished garment of 42”.

NB The white version is knit in my own handspun yarn; the pink version is knit with the recommended Drops Alaska.
