This third and last design in my Snow in the Mirror pattern bundle uses one of the snowflake motifs featuring in the other patterns as well. Since there are instructions for full mittens as well as fingerless mitts included you get to choose from:

  • two backs of the hand designs,
  • two palm designs and
  • two thumb designs,

which you can mix-and-match as your heart desires (and your yarn quantities permit).
If you have knitted mittens before and have experience with colourwork, this project can help you combining these two techniques and will leave you feeling quite accomplished. You should be familiar with stranded knitting, be comfortable with working in the round, increasing and decreasing as well as reading from charts. The mittens are grafted using the Kitchener stitch.

Gauge
27 sts / 30 rnds = 10cm (4in) square in stocking stitch over colourwork using 3mm needles after blocking

Size
one size only, but the pattern includes instructions for full mittens as well as fingerless mitts

Finished Measurements
mittens
hand circumference above thumb: 20cm / 8in
length: 24cm / 9.4in

fingerless mitts
hand circumference above thumb: 20cm / 8in
length: 20cm / 8in

Materials
The sample uses John Arbon Textiles Knit by Numbers DK yarn, which is 100% merino. It is very soft and a joy to wear.

Choose two colours with high contrast to emphasise the mirror effect. The sample colours are KBN11 (brown) and KBN55 (natural white).

You’ll need
for the mittens: 0.25 skeins of the darker colour as well as 0.5 skeins of the lighter colour;
for the fingerless mitts: 0.5 skeins of each colour.

The sample was knitted using 3.0mm dpns.
Stitch markers could be helpful and you’ll need a stitchholder or waste yarn for holding the thumb stitches.

Have fun knitting and enjoy keeping your hands warm with your new mittens or mitts.
