Snowflakes are fascinating. They may be tiny, fleeting and seem inconsequential on their own, but they are all unique and together form one of the most beautiful weather phenomenons. They also instil two completely different vibes: cosy Christmas or harsh, icy winter. And because these most delicate of creations are so special, I have always loved working them into my winter designs.

And just as snowflakes are individual, my Snowflake Cowl is made up of individual snowflake motifs. This not only makes the cowl a fun knit as each design is revealed, but it also means that you can wear the cowl to show off whichever is your favourite snowflake scene on any given day.

The pattern itself is worked in the round with moss stitch borders and a simple knit stitch colourwork section. This combined with the easy to follow instructions in both chart and written form make it perfect for those wanting to try colourwork for the first time as well as being able to keep more experienced knitters entertained.

The cowl uses DK yarn, but being a colourwork project it certainly feels cosier whilst you’re working on it and indeed wearing it. You can use two colours as I have in the sample or you can use up some left over yarns for the snowflakes to create a multicoloured tableau.

It’s a gorgeous pattern with so many options to make it as unique as a snowflake itself. And that makes it the perfect Christmas/winter gift knit for either yourself or for someone else. And whether you knit a round a day or relax in front of your favourite seasonal films, it’s a satisfying project that you will enjoy knitting again and again.

Happy Knitting!
