Intermediate skill level. A knowledge of Tunisian crochet in the round is required.

These motifs are made using Tunisian crochet in the round. The photographs illustrate them made with Cotton Kings Rainbow 8/8 quality, 100% cotton, a double knitting weight yarn. One 50g ball of each is required to make one place mat and one coaster, with a 5.00mm double ended crochet hook or size required to obtain the correct tension/gauge. (Although, tension/gauge is not essential).

The first round is made by working regular double crochet (US single crochet) stitches into a magic ring, finishing with a slip stitch to join. The second round onward uses Tunisian crochet stitches in the round, with an optional edging of UK double crochet (US single crochet).

As these motifs are worked in continuous rounds, you will need to work each round in sections of a few stitches at a time. Stitch markers might be helpful.
