Sol LeWitt was an American artist who pioneered conceptual art. His Wall Drawings, of which he created 1,350 in 40 years, are instructions for how to create the drawings—others executed the instructions in a museum or gallery space.

Le Witt’s art focused on his ideas, not their execution. Knitting can take a similar approach: the pattern is an idea that leaves room for the individual craftperson’s interpretation.

The Sol LeWitt series of patterns comprises simple designs that use the most basic elements of knitting.
