This scarf depicts the planets of our solar system on one side with their vital statistics on the other. It takes 600 yards each of a fingering weight in black and light gray (I used Berroco Ultra Wool Fine, 150 g of each), and then an appropriate color for each of the planets. Mercury can use the light gray, Venus 2 yards of yellow-white, Earth 2 yards of blue-white, Mars 1 yard of red, Jupiter 44 yards of variegated red, Saturn 44 yards of variegated orange, Uranus 11 yards of dark blue, and Neptune 11 yards of light blue.

The scale of the Solar System is so mind-boggling that it’s truly hard to grasp. In order to show visible planets in relation to each other, we have to bring them much closer together. But I’ve done so proportionally, so there are two different scales of measurement: one for the sizes of planets, and one for the distances from the sun (if you wanted to keep to a single scale, you could always knit the scarf over 5 miles long, but it would take considerably more yarn).

The pattern is available in my e-book, and kits including pattern and yarn are linked below.
