The South Facing Mittens are inspired by the natural colors of Badgerface Fiber’s WAA yarn and the knowledge that Spring comes after Winter. In the depths of Winter, these mittens will both remind you that early Spring flowers come up on the South-facing hills and keep your hands toasty warm. The clun forest wool, alpaca, and suri alpaca blend of WAA is a delight to knit, sliding easily over your needles. The yarn’s luxurious halo makes it warm to wear.

If you get a chance, visit Getbentz Farm in Northfield, MN and ask Theresa about her favorite mushrooms that just happen to appear on those same South-facing hills.

Yarn
Badgerface Fiber WAA in 2 colors
Main Color (MC): Grey; 130-150 yds
Contrast Color 1 (CC1): White; 100-120 yds

Badgerface Fiber WAA is a strong and lofty DK weight yarn with a bit of fuzz. If you’re substituting yarn, pick a DK (or heavy fingering) weight yarn that will be equally warm.

Needles
The sample is a small, knit on US0 (2 mm) and US1.5 (2.5 mm) circulars using magic loop. Feel free to use double-pointed needles if that is your jam.

The mitten size can be made larger simply by using larger needles. The sample is made in a size small, and test knitters have knit larger versions at looser gauge with larger needles.

Gauge
Small: 34 st, 33 rows in 4 inches
Medium: 31 st, 30 rows in 4 inches

Check your gauge carefully and adjust your needle appropriately. Size up if you have too many stitches per inch, size down if you have too few.
