Spanish Crochet Bag by A Lady

Spanish Crochet Bag

by A Lady
Out of print. This pattern was available for free.

Instructions to crochet a flat handbag consisting of two circles. Suggested to be made in “shades of Chenille, from very light to black”.

The author describes it as such:

This kind of crochet bag is flat, and in great vogue among the beautied of Madrid. Whether Ferdinand the VIIth, who was extremely fond of work usually appropriated to the softer sex, set the fashion of using them, we will not assert: though in such a case he would, in truth, have been much better employed than in oversetting the institutions of his country, and preparing the way for the dreadful anarchy which has since prevailed.

The book dates from 1844, it was dedicated to the Queen of England, and is available for free on Google Books.
