Spectre 5 : An elongated hexagon-shaped shawl inspired by Sabine Wren from Star Wars, knit in fragments using a combination of hexagon lace and Brioche Firebird motifs, then forged together in the center to create the perfect Mandalorian-inspired shawl.
Yarn notes:
This shawl is MEANT for a beautiful gradient of colors, featuring speckles and variegation. I highly recommend starting with your lightest color as Color A, then gradually getting darker to Color D. Please note that I used almost ALL of each color! If you’re worried about running out of yarn, I recommend going down a needle size.
This pattern has both written instructions as well as charts for all sections except for the garter stitch center. I recommend following the charts for the best knitting experience.
Skill Level:
Intermediate - Advanced. I highly recommend having previous brioche knitting experience before making this shawl.
Techniques Used:
knit, purl, Japanese lace with yarn-overs and knit decreases, brioche knit (brk), brioche purl (brp), sl1yo, brioche increases and decreases, Twisted German Cast On, knitting in the round
Construction Notes:
“This is gonna be fun. Very fun.” Sabine Wren is the PERFECT Rebel to represent this year’s Star Wars shawl! The shawl shape was inspired by the elongated hexagon shape found on Mandalorian armor. Many thanks to Lauren from Valkyrie Fibers for thinking of this idea and for all the inspiration. Spectre 5 is Sabine’s call sign when she is running Rebel missions on The Ghost with her Rebel friends. Like I said in the yarn notes, this shawl is absolutely meant for gradient yarns! Choose 4 colors in a gradient, going from light to dark or from one color to another. Lauren and I chose colors meant to mimic Sabine Wren’s gorgeous hair in Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels (her hair is always changing). You will work 2 separate Fragments of the shawl identically, then forge them together in the center. Each Fragment is worked in a polygon segment shape, with stitches increased at the edge and decreased in the center, creating the points of the elongated hexagon shape. You will alternate between Japanese hexagon lace and two-color brioche Firebird motifs (Sabine’s graffiti tag), which will blend the colors beautifully until you reach the center. Once both Fragments are complete, you will forge them together by creating a decreased diamond center in garter stitch, blending the colors together.
I love wearing this shawl wrapped around my neck with the bottom points facing down. It could also be wrapped around your shoulders for an elegant night out.
