This little cardi evokes fields of wheat swaying in the Summer breeze, with their beautifully patterned ears laden with grain. This design is all about the raglan lines with their beautiful cable accent, and how they contrast with the simple garter yoke in the most satisfying way. The rest of the body is worked in stockinette and flares out gently for a slight A-shape silhouette.
With its cap sleeves, Spelt is the perfect layering piece to wear over a simple T-shirt or a fancy dress. The kind of easy and enjoyable knit you will make again and again.

PATTERN NOTES:

This cardigan is knit seamlessly from the top down, with a simple cable feature at the raglans. Stitches for the cap sleeves are bound off, then the fronts and back of the cardigan are worked flat individually, then worked in one piece to the hemline. The button bands are worked as you go.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Casting on, knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, yarn over, working a simple cable pattern, binding off, blocking.

SIZES:

3mo (6mo, 12mo, 18mo // 2yo, 4yo, 6yo, 8yo, 10yo)
To fit chest: 16 (17, 18, 19 // 21, 23, 25, 26.5, 28) inches or 40.5 (43, 45.5, 48.5 // 53.5, 58.5, 63.5, 67.5, 71) cm
Garment chest circumference: 18.25 (19.5, 21.25, 22 // 23.5, 25.25, 27, 28.5, 30) inches or 46.5 (49.5, 54, 56 // 59.5, 64, 68.5, 72.5, 76) cm.
In general it’s best to go by the recipient’s actual chest measurement when selecting the appropriate size instead of the age label. You can also choose a size according to how much ease you’d like the garment to have.

YARN REQUIREMENTS:

Approximately 225 (300, 350, 400 // 450, 500, 575, 650, 750) yds or 206 (274, 320, 365 // 411, 457, 526, 594, 686) meters of dk (8 ply) to sport (5 ply) weight yarn

Size 3mo sample is knit in Manos Del Uruguay’s Silk Blend, colorway “Shale.” Please note that this yarn isn’t machine-washable. Any yarn of the same weight that you can get gauge with can be substituted.

GAUGE:

21 sts x 44 rows (22 ridges) = 4 inches or 10 cm in garter stitch after blocking
22 sts x 34 rows = 4 inches or 10 cm in stockinette stitch after blocking
Please adjust needle size if needed to achieve the recommended gauge.

NEEDLES:

US 6 or 4 mm diameter circular needle (or size needed to match garter stitch gauge) at least 32 inches or 80 cm in length (

Note: you need a circular needle because this garment is worked in one piece, and because the needle will accommodate all the stitches)

  • tapestry needle
  • 6 (7, 7, 8 // 8, 9, 9, 10, 10) buttons (or quantity desired), 1/2 inch or 1.2 cm in diameter
