Sometimes, when I pick up yarn and needles, the mindful part of my brain churns round and round, thinking of ways to work with a concept and design which might result in something both original and artful. Sometimes the yarn speaks to me. Other times, a designer’s work is the impetus. This glove design is a response to the colors and texture of a Schoeppel yarn and the work of Knitting and So On.

Don’t fear the design’s construction. Once the short rows are worked the rest is essentially the same as any other knit glove. Look deep into your stash for a colorful, patterned yarn to guide your way. Listen to your yarn choice and complement it with other color(s). A bit more guidance is provided than is normally found for knitting a pair of gloves. I’m hoping this will help the more cautious to take the risk. And… it’s perfectly OK to be spinning in circles.

Techniques and Features:
Instructions are written using 2 circular needles. The cuff and upper hand are created from a flat circle whose diameter, when folded in half, approximates the measurement of glove size to be knit. The right and left gloves are worked identically. Once the thumb gusset is worked, live stitches from the circle’s edge are grafted with a contrasting decorative I-cord seam. Following the upper circle’s I-cord edge bind off, short rows even out the mid hand section. Short row instructions are written as w&t’s allowing knitters to substitute preferred short row methods. A schematic provides a map and sequence of how the stitches are employed to build the glove. The small and medium sizes are knit with fingering weight yarn. The large size is knit with sport weight yarn and mostly follows the instructions of the medium size glove.
