“Spring forward, Fall back” A little phrase to help us remember which way the clocks change twice a year to make the most of those daylight hours. Here in the UK, at the end of March, the clocks go forward one hour, marking the beginning of British Summertime – although in reality it’s just a few days after the Spring Equinox.
The lighter evenings always make me feel like I have more energy to get things done and, as the days begin to warm up I find socks are the perfect project for outdoor knitting too!

Knit from the cuff down with a cute picot cast on and a heel flap and gusset construction. The pattern is written for three ankle circumferences. Leg and foot length can be easily adjusted to suit.

Skill level
Moderately Easy - picot cast on may look a little daunting but it’s much simpler than it looks! Quick satisfying knit for more experienced knitters.

Skills needed

  • picot cast on (full instructions given)
  • knitting flat AND knitting in the round on DPNs or circular needle
  • k, p, k2tog, ssk, ktbl, k3tog tbl
  • picking up and knitting stitches on heel flap
  • kitchener stitch grafting at toe

Sizes
1 (2, 3)
Leg circumference: 16.5 (18.5, 21)cm – choose the size approx 5cm less than actual ankle measurement – there’s a lot of stretch in the lace pattern!
Leg length as per pattern: approx 12cm to heel flap (can be adjusted with more or fewer pattern repeats)
Foot length adjustable to fit.

Yarn Requirements
4ply/fingering sock yarn
Yarn used in sample: 4ply 75/25 Merino/nylon sock yarn by Ducky Darlings Yarn in limited edition Flower Power FUnd colourway ‘Viva Viola’

These are designed as ankle socks so one 100g skein is more than enough for all sizes.

Gauge
34sts x 40rows = 10cm stocking stitch knit in the round
34sts x 49 rows = 10cm lace pattern knit in the round

Needles
2.5mm / US 1.5 DPNS or circular knitting needles suitable for working small circumferences in the round OR size required to get gauge
1 pair of needles in same size for working picot cast on (optional)
