June 13, 2015: A fully updated version that adds an optional chart D, and written instructions for all the lace stitches, has been uploaded. If the version you have does not have written lace instructions, please download the current version. The instructions about repeating Chart C in prior version are incorrect.

I designed this kerchief/shawlette to teach a beginner’s lace class. It uses three charts, and takes only one skein of Koigu! That said, it is a little thing, hence its ‘kerchief’ name.

The two main stitch patterns can be repeated to make the shawl larger, if you want. Sockpirate knit a really great variation where she repeated only part of Pattern C.

The ‘Spring Garden’ part of the name came about because I think the two lace patterns together look like stems with a flower bloom at the top (the bottom border of the shawl). The lace patterns are traditional Shetland stitches, adapted to make for simpler increases along the border and an elegant flow from one pattern to the next.
