In Steamboat Springs, Colorado, the first day of spring is usually accompanied by a big snowfall. Skiing continues until mid-April, and the snow doesn’t end until…. Well, we can get snow any day of the year. However, eventually the constant blanket of snow disappears from my yard to reveal green grass, small flowers appear and the hills change from gray to green. This hat celebrates that moment where spring promises to stay. The garter stitch trail works its way across lacework trees to finish up with a lighterweight garterstitch top, all of this working together to give you a hat that lightly warms your head – perfect for those chilly spring days!

I have also completed a version of this hat I call the “Asheville Spring Trail.” I finished this hat on my spring break trip to visit my mother-in-law in Asheville, NC. I used Malabrigo in place of the Manos del Uruguay and a dark brown skein of the Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino for the trail, and I’ve worn it as I hike each day this spring.

The lace section of this hat has been charted and written out.

This hat has been test knitted.
