Spun Flora began with a gift: handspun yarn from our friend Victoria (@lonewolf_knits), a birthday surprise that sparked a fresh take on one of our favorite designs, Antique Flora. The soft shifts in color and gentle texture of the yarn led us to reinterpret the motif and shape into something lighter and more relaxed.
We refined the colorwork and simplified the silhouette so the yarn takes center stage. While inspired by handspun, Spun Flora works beautifully in any DK weight yarn and gives you plenty of room to play with color and fit.
Design Details
A floral colorwork motif grows outward from the neckline and settles into smooth stockinette through the body. Short sleeves and clean finishing details make this an easy piece to wear and style.
The pattern includes both written and charted colorwork instructions so you can work whichever way you prefer.
Pattern Highlights
- Seamless, top down construction
- Floral colorwork motif with written and charted instructions
- Easy to customize length and fit
- Works beautifully for handspun or DK yarns
Construction Overview
Spun Flora is worked seamlessly from the top down. After back of neck short rows, the yoke is worked in the round using a main color and contrast color.
Once the yoke is complete, the body continues in stockinette to the hem and finishes with 2x2 ribbing and a sewn bind off. Sleeves are picked up and worked in the round with matching ribbed cuffs.
Yarn Notes
This design celebrates the natural variation in texture and color that makes each skein unique. High contrast or tonal pairings both highlight the motif in different ways.
You can use DK weight yarn, fingering weight held double, or handspun of a similar weight. Our sample uses handspun from 29 Bridges Studio fiber in the color Pietersite for the contrast.
