Square Wheel Throw
Materials needed:

  • Red Heart Super Saver solids 7 oz balls: 1 ball each Pretty N Pink (A), Delft Blue (B), Lemon (C), Spring Green (D), black (E),
  • Red Heart Super Saver multi 5 oz balls: 3 balls Bikini (MC)
  • Crochet hook size I/9 (5.5 mm)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)

Pattern is a multiple of 8 + 2. Finished size is approximately 40” square.

Abbreviations:
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
sl st – slip stitch
sk – skip
yo – yarn over
9dc-sh – 9 double crochet shell. Work 9 dc in the same stitch
9dc-cl – 9 double crochet cluster. Leaving last loop on hook, work a dc in each of next 9 stitches, yo and draw through all 10 loops, yo draw through to lock. This locking stitch forms an “eye” into which shells are worked.

With MC, ch 122, turn.

Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, * sk 3 ch, 9dc-sh in next ch, sk 3 ch, sl st in next ch, repeat from * across. Fasten off MC. Turn.

Row 2: Join E with sl st in last st of row below, ch 1, sc in same st, * sc in next 9 dc, work a sc around sl st and ch of row 1, repeat from * across ending with sc in last sl st of row below. Fasten off E. Turn.

Row 3 Join A. Ch 3, leaving last loop on hook, dc in next 4 sc, yo, draw through all loops on hook, yo, draw through loop to lock (beg half cluster), * ch 7, sk 1 sc, over next 9 sc work 9dc-cl, repeat from * across, ending with ch 7 dc in next 5 sc, yo, draw through all loops on hook, yo, draw through loop to lock (end half cluster). Do not fasten off. Turn

Row 4: Ch 3, work 4 dc in “eye’ , * sl st in ch7 sp, work 9dc-sh in next “eye”, repeat from * across, ending with sl st in ch7 sp, 5 dc in top of ch3. Fasten off. Turn.

Row 5: Join E. Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 4 dc. Working over sl st and ch7, sc in sc 3 rows below (row 2), sc in next 9 dc, repeat from across ending with sc in last 4 dc and top of ch3. Fasten off. Turn.

Row 6: Join MC. Ch 1, sl st in same st, ch 3, * work 9dc-cl over next 9 st, ch 7, sk next sc, repeat from * across, ending with ch 3, join with sl st in last sc. Do not fasten off. Turn.

Row 7: Ch 1, st st in same st, 9dc-sh in next “eye”, sl st in ch7 sp, repeat from * across, ending with sl st in last st. Fasten off. Turn.

Row 8: working over 2 prev rows, join E in first st 3 rows below, ch 1, sc in same st, * sc in each of next 9 dc, working over sl st and ch7, sc in sc 3 rows below, reoeat from * across. Fasten off., Turn.

Repeat rows 3 – 8 for pattern, substituting color B, C, and D for color 1 on rows 3 and 4 until desired length, ending with Row 6.

Edging: With E, work 2 rounds of sc evenly along each side of afghan placing 3 sc in each corner. Fasten off, Weave in ends.
