My father was an avid stained glass creator, and his workshop was always full of large, uncut panes of glass. I was mesmerized by them as a child, and I loved looking at the random swirls and variances in tone and color. I am often reminded of them when I work with tonal and variegated yarns.

As a step toward a fluffier version of his creations, I designed this afghan of giant, skein-sized granny squares. It’s perfect for those random one-skeiners we all have lying around, and allows the yarn to do all the work! It showcases tonal and variegated yarns within a neutral border—exactly like the panels of glass my father had in his workshop. It’s a great pattern for the novice crocheter’s library—and quite the stashbuster, too!

The 4-panel finished product is approximately 36x36 inches using worsted weight yarn.
