I have implemented the Pay What You Can system. Each item is listed at what I think is fair for my work and designing each item. But due to circumstances out of each of our control, I want to make sure my patterns are accessible for everyone. Use code OLIVE to save $1 off this pattern.

Standard Route, a classic ribbed beanie, came about when my son asked for a standard ribbed hat like his brother had bought in a store. I wasn’t satisfied with all aspects of any certain pattern I found, so I created my own.

Worked in 1x1 rib from bottom to top, the decreases are worked to not have a pointy top, but a well rounded crown to fit the top of the head. It can be worn with a rolled brim for a fitted beanie, or without a rolled brim for a nice slouchy fit. (To get rid of the pointy top that some people have mentioned, the hat may need to be blocked. Wash it, let soak, squeeze out water, shape hat on a flat surface, let dry. Easy peasy. Or leave as is like I did on my second hat for a more fad-friendly fashion.)

This beanie can be knit with DK yarn, using about half of the yardage listed. Or it can be knit holding two strands of fingering weight together- hence twice the yardage needed as DK, approximate amounts listed above.

Sample is a size M knit with two strands of fingering weight, in Knit Picks Palette, held together throughout. Total of yarn used- 425 yards/388.6 meters.

The hat may very well fit larger sizes than listed as the stitch is very stretchy. However, I listed the sizes for a comfortable fit with a mid-stretch to the fabric. Fully stretched will fit larger but will take away from some of the height of the hat.
