It looks complicated, but is surprisingly simple to make. It knits up quickly because it is made with super chunky yarn. You can make the whole thing from start to finish in one whole day!

I was inspired to design this cushion when I discovered a knitting stitch called Star Stitch when I was browsing the internet. It reminded me of night-time walks with my dog, gazing at the sky whilst my pup sniffed the air and ground with wonderment.

This is a knitting and sewing pattern to make your own cushion cover. It has a knitted front cover and a fabric back with an overlapping opening so you can fill it with a cushion pad.

• Materials: I used a super chunky, ethically sourced, merino yarn in mustard yellow to knit the front of the cushion. And a medium weight cotton fabric in a solid grey colour for the rest of the cover.

• You will need: 200g super chunky yarn Approx 0.45m x 0.45m iron-on interlining, heavy weight Approx 1.1m x 0.45m medium weight fabric, without much stretch, such as a woven cotton, lighter weight denim or linen A cushion pad measuring 0.4m x 0.4m (40cm x 40cm) 10mm single pointed knitting needles Sewing thread Cutting, sewing and ironing tools

• Size: The pattern provides instructions for making a cushion cover that measures 40cm x 40cm. It can be adjusted to fit any size of cushion.

• How it is made: This cushion cover is knitted in Star Stitch knitting stitch with a super chunky yarn to create the front of the cover. The rest is made with fabric, and is preferably sewn with a sewing machine to get a professional finish, although it can also be done by hand.

• Skill level: This is a pattern for intermediate knitters. You need to be able to cast on and cast off, knit, purl, and how to purl stitches together.
