This is a progressive collection of five washcloth patterns for beginner knitters. They are intended to be simple and help a newbie navigate reading a pattern for the first time.

You’ll learn how to yarn over, knit 2 stitches together, and purl 2 stitches together. Never fear - there are videos to help you through each step!

These patterns are not meant to be the same size. However, you will cast on 40 or 41 stitches in each pattern. The point is to see how different combinations of stitches can greatly change the size of a finished object.

I see questions all the time from beginners who want a place to start, a real project they can sink their teeth into. It’s important to have success early on even if there are mistakes. Once you get that first project behind you, you can really call yourself a knitter.

So START HERE, and do not give up!

Yarn
I prefer to knit washcloths with cotton yarn because they wash and dry well. Each of these patterns uses about 100 -150 yards of worsted weight yarn depending on your gauge which is not important. I personally used Hobby Lobby’s I Love this Cotton and was able to get about two washcloths out of one skein.

These patterns have been tested by knitters with a range of experience.
