This design is the first of a series—twelve explorations of different stitch patterns throughout 2026—and the first of three projects focused on eyelets and lace. This month, we’re working simple eyelets staggered across a field of plain knitting. The pattern document includes general instructions for working the eyelet stitch pattern flat and in the round, as well as specific instructions for a sample square, a simple cowl and a bonus hat (not photographed). You’ll also find instructions for working this stitch pattern two different ways—with k2tog decreases or with ssk decreases.

The yarn in my sample is a beautiful, marled, “thick ‘n’ thin” handspun yarn of Targhee wool. The fibre was dyed by Deep Dyed Yarns and spun by UUeweKathryn . Choose a DK/light worsted commercial yarn as a substitute to get a similar result, or consider knitting your project in a completely different weight of yarn.

The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:

  • cast on and bind off;
  • knit and purl;
  • knitting a stitch through the back loop (leg);
  • yo increase;
  • k2tog or ssk decrease.
