This design is the ninth of a series—twelve explorations of different stitch patterns throughout 2026—and the last of three projects focused on cables. This month, we are looking at travelling cables—twists that lean across a fabric over several rows. There are instructions for a basic lean that travels back and forth over reverse stocking stitch so you can practise the technique. The sample square features diamond-shaped cables worked over stocking stitch—a stitch pattern that can function as a wide panel or an allover fabric. The scarf project features a traditional Aran stitch pattern that has cables travelling over both reverse stocking stitch and the textured “Irish moss” stitch pattern.

The techniques that you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:

  • cast on and bind off;
  • knit and purl;
  • work cables--instructions for C3B, C3F, T3B, T3F, and T5BP are included in the pattern.
