Stitch Play 26j
This design is the tenth of a series—twelve explorations of different stitch patterns throughout 2026—and the first of three projects focused on twisted stitches. Already, this is controversial. I’m not talking about working a stitch through the back loop to twist it, I’m talking about manoeuvres that are essentially 1 x 1 cables. Some designers refer to this little cable technique as twist stitches, but others call it twisted. I tend to refer to a single manoeuvre as a twist, but I think of the overall technique as twisted. And then there are Bavarian twisted stitches, which involve working a completely different technique to create high-relief twisted stockinette stitches travelling over reverse stocking stitch. This month, we are looking at a simple twisted rib, which you can use anywhere you would use a regular rib. It creates interesting texture, and I’ve used it to jazz up a plain, stocking stitch hat. The sample square shows a more relaxed version of the twist, worked over four rows, rather than two, and looking more like little cables than the 2-row variety.
The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:
- cast on and bind off;
- knit and purl;
- work in the round;
- complete a right twist (explained in the pattern, with a link to a video tutorial).
