This design is the eleventh of a series—twelve explorations of different stitch patterns throughout 2026—and the second of three projects focused on twisted stitches. Last month, our twisted rib featured only right twists; this month, we are focussing on a stitch pattern that combines right and left twists. The same stitch pattern is featured in both projects—a sample square that you can knit up as a washcloth and a pair of wristwarmers. The background stitch varies, so you can see how the pattern emerges out of different backgrounds, and you can also use this stitch pattern as an allover pattern. Consider knitting it in the round for a hat or a cowl—with a twisted rib brim or hems for even more texture!

The techniques you will need to know, or learn, to complete this project are:

• cast on and bind off,
• knit and purl;
• kfb increase;
• k2tog and p2tog decreases;
• right and left twist.
