Stonewall Mitaines
Stonewall Mitaines are simple, modern fingerless mitts designed to showcase the beauty of handspun cashmere. The structure is clean and intuitive: garter‑stitch body, a dot–eyelet–dot decorative band, and proportions that feel light, contemporary, and intentional.
This pattern is written for flat knitting, though it can be adapted for knitting in the round. The instructions are beginner‑friendly for spinners who want a first project that honors their yarn without overwhelming it.
The recommended yarn is handspun natural cashmere roving, spun as a single ply with enough twist to hold together while keeping the softness and movement that make cashmere what it is. This is a slow, careful project — an heirloom piece made from a fiber that deserves time and attention. Using locally sourced roving is encouraged whenever possible.
The mitts are seamed along the side, with a simple thumb opening and a graceful vertical line that flatters the hand. Cashmere blooms beautifully after blocking, creating a soft, airy fabric with gentle structure.
